Did this little sketch while at work. (sound familiar?) Poor Ben Grimm, he's kind of bummed out because of the snow day.

It's a fun Sketchbook Challenge this month, what the holidays mean to me. Well, comics are part of my everyday, so why not play with that and have comics characters in their holidays?

Hey everybody, just checking in with a few sketch commissions for people that bought the b-one comics 5 packs. It's the good ol' grasshopper. I started publishing mini comics a long long time ago and this entity has been with me every step of the way. Stonebrook is my comics love and the grasshopper is my mistress. I love them both for different reasons, since they flex different storytelling aspects. These were done rather quickly, but I think they all have at least a modicum of charm.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I have a lot of work in progress pages for a project with Jon Westhoff but we’re not quite ready to announce it just yet.

So for fun I drew this little guy here. Yeah that’s good ol’ Cyclops. He seems to have developed an eating disorder after the whole schism event. This was drawn for David A Price of 11 O’Clock Comics fame. I did it as a cheer me up for him, I hope that you all like it as well.

Oh, Slim. You’ve let yourself go. L

Drink n Draw Quickie

I didn't expect to do any drawing last night at the bars but I did manage to squeak this one out. Still in the Halloween theme, it's a good ol' mummy. A fairly static shot, but in my defense it was pretty dark in there.

Warm Up Sketch: Capwolf!

Another warm up sketch that took a tad bit too long (darn research). This one is of the infamous "Capwolf". Yeah, Marvel decided to turn Cappy into a werewolf in a six part story way back in 1992. Sounds kind of ridiculous, but let's face it, it looks pretty cool. In the tradition of October & Halloween I thought it was a fitting little sketch. I hope you like it.

Apocalypse...Meh Process

Process.

For todays post I thought I'd share a little bit of my process from script to inks and partial letters. This is the first panel to the next Apocalypse...Meh two page short story scheduled to be printed in my self published comic, b-one #6. Jon Westhoff wrote the script as per usual which I included here. Next on the list if the blue line roughs which were hard to show so a turned up the contrast and threshold. Next are the pencils. Since I ink my own pencils I tend to leave them pretty rough. The next step is my favorite! When I ink I add depth and weight to the figure work and put in shadows and fill in blacks. This story doesn't have many shadows, since it is set in the day and is a light comical piece. Next is logo placement which I do in phostoshop. I usually letter my own comics as well, but that step is missing here because I will not be lettering this story.

So that's a very truncated view into my process for a panel. I'd like to note that there would be much more here if this had been my first time depicting these characters, There's be character outlines, roughs etc. Because I was already familiar with the characters and the way they interact I did most of the placement directly on the artboard. I love these characters, I had a lot of fun doing this story.

Well that's it. This seems pretty self indulgent to me but I have been asked for process stuff, so here it is.

11 O'Clock Comics Sketchbook Challenge 90's X-Men FINAL ENTRY

KISSY.

With all the hype for X-Men Schism with all the conflict between Cyclops & Wolverine I think that this is the only fitting resolution to the Schism storyline. Admittedly, I am not reading the title, but all the podcasters talking about the storyline and the confrontation these two men have given me the feeling that they are in love with each other and deeply confused about their feelings. This confusion manifests as rage within the comics, but not when the brush is in my hand! I hope you enjoy the image. It is a subject matter that I haven't explored in comics before.

As most of you probably already know, I do a weekly podcast with Jon Westhoff & Paul Wheels. It's called Earth 2 Podcast and we've recently branched out the show to a satellite mini-show entitled E2P Shots, No Chase. It's a smaller, shorter, bite-sized show usually focusing on one book. This week we did something different and I had the pleasure of talking to 11 O'clock Comics forumite & twitter biddy Felipe Garza. It was a fun conversation about comics. Please listen on the player below or subscribe via podbean or itunes. Thanks a million.

11 O'Clock Comics Sketchbook Challenge 90's X-Men (again)

See? I toldja that I would try to post here more often. Here's another 90's X-character from the EOC Challenge for September. I took a lot more time on this than I expected so it shouldn't really count as a warm up, since it cut into my actual inking time for an upcoming Apocalypse...Meh short.

Anyway, enough of that. Here's Cameron Hodge. 5.5"x7" Ink on Bristol

11 O'Clock Comics Sketchbook Challenge & Warm ups

Hello all, Just trying to be a bit more proactive on this blog thing. I'll be posting some warm ups, drink n drawings, and 11 O'Clock Sketchbook Challenge pieces. The EOC Sketchbook are basically a bunch of people getting to gether and tossing out ideas for what to draw for the month. Anyone can participate and while there are rules they are pretty lax. It's fun for me.

So here is my EOC Sketchbook drawing for today. The theme is 1990's X-Men so I thought I'd bring inm classic Excalibur member Rachel Summers. Rocking it old school with a No. 2 pencil and some copy paper. I hope you like.

Labor Day blog catch-up!

I know it's been a while since my last post, I must apologize for that. This post is once again my attempt to maintain this blog with some semblance of regularity. I have been quite busy expanding the scope of Earth 2 Podcast by starting a bite sized complimentary show called E2P: Shots, No Chase. Yes, it should be "chaser" but I'm hood and I like false abbreviations. Yes, I am that lazy! As you may know I also completed and published the 5th issue of my indie/mini comic b-one in July with much thanks to my friends in and off the internet for continued support. To simplify the list I'll just name the 11 o'clock Comics Podcast and their forum community.

A special thank goes to Jon Westhoff who not only is friend and collaborator, he is also the one who does the promotion for all our products, gets us in comics shops, he is in charge of distribution, and set up the web store http://kingbonepress.storenvy.com/

I am fast at work on b-one #6 with all new stories all illustrated by myself. Issue 6 will feature some new collaborators mainly Hugo Ornelas & Lawrence Rosales. Two completely different tales told in completely different ways. I can't wait for you to see them. As per usual I will include some Stonebrook Tales and a "secret" story cowriten by the aforementioned Jon Westhoff!

Alright, enough of this! Back to the drawing board...but first here's a sneak peek!

As always you can hear me as part of Earth 2 Podcast talking about comics & comics culture with my friends.

Things happen so quickly that I haven’t had time to update this blog in a while. Earth 2 Podcast has been picking up steam, currently working on b-one #4, taking a break from the Apocalypse…Meh webcomic to contribute to another Jon Westhoff production; the 11 O’clock Comics anthology. We haven’t forgotten about Apocalypse…Meh though, in fact Jon and I will have a booth this year in C2E2’s Webcomic Alley. Drop by to say hi and pick up some freebies or buy some merchandise. Or both! We’re more interested in meeting all of you, we do this for the love of comics. Alright I better get going, I have a lot of work ahead of me. I’ll try to post progress pictures and links whenever possible.

Monday, January 3, 2011

Well are you tired of reading everybody's blogs, tweets and social network posts that start off with "It's 2011..."? Not yet? Ok, it's 2011 and I figured that it was about time that I be a little more active on the internet. Sure it takes a lot of time, but you three that read this are totally worth it. Look for a new issue of b-one in the coming months, a printed version of Apocalypse...Meh at the cons and hopefully a contribution to an as of yet unnamed anthology. In other words, just look forward to having me be more publically visable this year.

All right, nothing else to see here. Move along, there's better time wasters out there.
