Not Dailies: 2016 Sketches April Week 2

Welcome back to Not Dailies my little almost daily drawing project. My intention is to do what I can during the week, between comic pages and art projects, and then post scans of them here the following week.

OOPS! I was crazy busy and caught the scurvy last week so I wasn't in the position to do any sketches. Apologies.

If you want to see them in real time I photograph them and post them on my twitter account @slurmo and instagram kingbonepress as they are completed.

This week's drawings are all done on sketch paper. You'll notice some bleed, saturation, and less smooth inkwash transitions. It's thirsty paper.

Hello all! I promised to post a link to my Society6 page and here it is! If you aren't familiar with Society6, they are a print and merchandise maker that does print on demand work. My intention is to mix a few mashups like the ones you see on this page with a few legitimate art print designs like the Grasshopper one that I did a few months ago. In a self indulgent, narcissist turn, I will make all the (original) t-shirts worn by Manuel and Chivo in Stonebrook available for purchase. I'd like to do 50/50 ratio on fun mashups and such and completely original designs. Look for more in the future.

Ape not kill ape.

Ah, Koba you magnificent bonobo. I have mixed feelings about this piece. I had a great time drawing it but I think that the mashup of Koba and Carmen Miranda of the Copacabana is a little too subtle. I didn't want it to be over the top, but it seems that there's something missing. Probably citrus fruit.

I'm getting more comfortable coloring and employed a few new techniques (for me) on this piece.

There was also this little mistake when I accidentally opened up a lower layer when coloring. you can see a little bit of the process here with the flat colors. I liked they way it looked so I saved a copy to post here.

I was spending too much time away from the drawing board as I was scanning, coloring and lettering my stories in Bullet Proof Chicken Nuggets so I decided to have a little fun. "Female Thor" was getting a whole lot of buzz and I don't believe all the negative publicity about it. This drawing has no "statement" attached, it's just me having fun. Comics are still fun, right? 

The Luba and "female Thor" mashup seems obvious, but I haven't seen anybody do it yet. If I'm wrong I'm sure the internet will let me know. Oh, one last note. The color palette is about 90% taken straight from Gilbert Hernandez covers. The homage should be obvious, but I just wanted it said publically.

M.O.D.O.K.'s Laboratory!

Sometimes it isn't about putting out pages or fulfilling art obligations. Sometimes it's just about having fun. Dee Dee is one of my favorites, but she's really hard to illustrate.
